It is with great pleasure that I announce the first release of ClearHealth for the iPhone. This native iPhone application allows a provider to connect to your clearhealth installation and view schedules, select/search patients, and view lab results. This is an ALPHA quality release and there are several known issues detailed below. We would love to have feedback on the general structure of the application, installation deployment problems, feature requests, etc. Please report these in the forum or on this thread.

This application is built using the open source toolchain and so you must have an iPhone with AppTapp/Installer.app installed.

The clearhealth apptapp repository url is:

http://demo.clear-health.com/apptap

The application is delivered without any warranty or fitness for a particular purpose and is ALPHA level code. The source will be available as soon as we can clear it with regard to the license and any issues regarding the platform. It is not build using Apple's SDK and probably will not work on phones loaded with the SDK firmware.

This will add a category called "ClearHealthMobile", under that install the "CHMobile" application.

Requirements:

*CHMobile defaults to using our demo.clear-health.com site. You can edit the /Applications/CHMobile.app/Connection.plist xml data (on the phone via ssh or the finder application) to change that. You must have CH 2.2 or newer for the login automation to work. The schedule tab expects a report with a system name of "simple_provider_report". You must have the labs module enabled.

*Your installation must have a valid SSL certificate (not self-signed) and must be available over SSL. This is a requirement of the UIKit UIWebView class in apples libraries and firmware versions 1.0.x - 1.1.4 . It appears to be resolved in later versions using the setAllowsAnyHTTPCertificate parameter, that is what is ignored on older firmware versions.

Known Issues:

*Selecting Transcription or Pictures button crashed application
They aren't implemented yet, give it a couple more weeks.

*Each section takes a long time to load. Each button bar selection completely reinitializes that section. It needs to be optimized to just reload the data.

*The icons are (hideous, too big, strange). Give our graphic guys some additional versions to clean them up.

Thanks!

It seems like AppTapp/Installer.app requires jailbreaking the iphone. Is that the case?

Any plans to migrate to the iphone SDK when that becomes available?

Yes, the phone needs to be jailbroken. At this point I think it is very unlikely that we will move to the apple SDK anytime soon. We have seen a copy of the required NDA and it is not compatible with open source. Additionally if you consult various online sources it appears that there are additional license terms on the SDK as well as the basic certified source process that are not compatible with the GPL and in general are anethema to open source.

Secondly it appears that were will be using APIs and using certain application functions that are not permitted by Apple to "certify" the software.

I can personally say as an avid iphone user it is pretty much crazy NOT to jailbreak it. There is a developer out there that created a tool to make this process ridiculously simple, his name is Zibri and his blog has all the details.

Obviously as a FOSS advocate and hacktivist I have no compunction about jail-breaking an iphone. However, as a health IT programmer, I cannot ever deploy a solution where the word "bricking" is something I have to explain to a doctor. I certainly hope apple sorts this mess out....

"Bricking" is a myth at this point. There really isn't anything you can do to an iPhone I am aware of using the generally available jailbreak tools that can't resolved by simply restoring it in itunes. We currently have a couple of large facilities actively using these devices and the jailbreak process (especially if you aren't also interested in switching to an alternate provider, that process is generally called unlocking) is trivial.

For example on 1.1.1 devices it just involved dialing a sequence of numbers on the calling pad and visiting a website in safari. On newer devices the tool Zibri created can perform the update in 1-3 minutes.

You can also easily restore the device to its original condition if you wanted to.

Clicking the link takes me to the Home page.

Am I doing something wrong?

Gary,

The link is to be put in the sources list in the AppTapp/Install.app application on the iPhone. That will cause the clearhealth category and the CHMobile app to be listed in the packages display where it can be installed.

Gary,

I am not sure what you mean. Do you have AppTapp/Install.app loaded on your iPhone?

The specific download bundle for the application is currently:

http://www.clear-health.com/download/CHMobile.zip

But that won't do you much good by itself. I guess you could SSH it to your iphone if you have that level of technical proficiency.

Note that the link is also subject to change which is why we have the installation source for use with AppTapp.
